Black Cohash

I was walking down the road near my house and suddenly the world smelled marvelous. Looking around I saw this beautiful large Black Cohash plant covered in bees.  It smelled so delicious to me that I just walked up to it and fought for nose space with the bees; ignoring my dog tugging on her leash. I had never smelled the plant in bloom before. I had read about the herb and its medicinal uses but no one had ever mentioned its aroma. It was a new smell to me and a wonderful one; I felt relaxed and happy as I stood there with bees buzzing by my ear.

The heavy vanilla, yet floral, scent was summoning the bees from all over the neighborhood to this patch of wet woods.  It made me think about the power of fragrance not just in aromatherapy, but in the everyday life and the mysterious communication of animals and plants around us. Mammal’s noses and therefore our brains (The nose is a direct channel to the olfactory bulb which is part of the limbic system.) are soothed, stimulated, summoned and delighted by smells.

Unseen and mysterious, fragrance is calling bees to flowers and telling us that fall has come, as we smell the sharp woodsmoke in the night air.

Fall brings so many evocative scents like crunchy fragrant  dead leaves, golden pine needles warmed in the sun and the tang of cold frosty mornings.  You don’t even need a bottle of essential oils to awaken memory and shift your mood!

If you do want a bottle of essential oils, a room spray, some fragrant bath oils or a stress-relieving roll on; let me know.  I make up personal blends that are healing and smell amazing.
